Tasting Notes

We love Mataro, also known as Mourvedre or Monastrell by people who can pronounce such words. Often used in blends of wine, it is a special treat to get to have some as single varietal wine. If you love deep reds, then you have to try some of this. There’s hints of liquorice and dark dried fruits with subtle tannins as well as a solid mouth feel. Aromas of freshly made smallgoods, ripe stone fruits and a hint of Moroccan spice combine to fill the palate with flavours and textures to sip on for hours.

HISTORY OF THE GRAPE

Mataro was one of the very first wine grape cultivars to come to Australia, dating back as far as James Busby in 1832, and made its way to the Barossa in the 1850’s. It is renowned as a classic grape variety in the Barossa.

HOW IT'S GROWN

If ever a variety was destined to be grown in the Barossa, it is this one. It loves warm dry growing conditions and can handle soils with low nutrient levels. Just as well really, as the Barossa has some of the oldest and toughest soils on the planet.

It has always been used as an important part of blends, but wise growers keep a bit aside for their table wines and using in traditional desert recipes.
